It’s a cross-department coordination issue (the worst kind!), but thinboxapp.com has been useful for alerting us if we cross ‘fatigue’ thresholds then we can adjust our sending plans.

Especially agree on testing to find what works for different segment, the power in triggered messages etc. But is it me, or are those DMA stats weird? I added up the percentages in the top chart for 2012, 2013 and 2014. 2012 and 2014 add up to 100%, 2013 adds up to 121%?

While I agree with the sentiment of the article 100%, I’m finding it hard to trust the numbers from the DMA now! 🙂 Am I going crazy here?

This is a trend I’m seeing too. In a way, switching to trigger mails etc. takes a lot of the guessing work out of the frequency question. Each recipient gets the amount of email “appropriate” to their likely needs, as expressed by the recipient themselves through purchase and browsing behavior.

Garry: do your clients that are enjoying success with this also have a frequency cap in place, so any one recipient can’t ever get more than X mails a month? Or have they found no need to set such a limit?

There is certainly no universal answer, the best frequency is going to depend on expectation, company, offer, audience. It does need testing over a 3 month period to determine this.

A case study contrary to the Toptable study concluded that:

“Going from four email messages per month to 15 per month
month tripled this company’s projected monthly revenue
without any significant negative impact on unsubscribe or
open rates. Put another way, when sending email at the rate
of once per week this company was missing three times the
amount of revenue it could have been making if sending
once every other day.”
