E-permission marketing today=getting quality opt-ins on web+browser/mobile apps+social platforms – much more complex than it used to be – but more opportunities too.

Thanks Stuart – this was a bit of a “blast from the past” – I think I originally wrote these permission marketing principles back in 2004ish, but they’re still so relevant today and thought the Princess Cruises showed this well.

You’ve encouraged me to do another update, since today permission marketing is a lot more complex – more options for opt-in in mobile apps and Facebook too, plus social sign-on.

Hi Duncan,

Hope all well with you. Thanks for raising the cookie monster. I have been keeping an eye on this. From what I read last year, this is a really weird law – as I understand it – the EU are proposing opt-in to every cookie unless “essential to service”. But it’s totally impractical IMO – it’s just not going to happen. So every site, every network ad campaign, analytics system is about to become illegal…

I think it will be one of the most significant things to happen in digital marketing this year, but there’s remarkably little discussed about it – this is my best source – from last Autumn: http://www.out-law.com/page-11380. Everyone seems to be sleepwalking into it!

Do you have any more up-to-date info on the requirements for site owners + advertisers? I know BERR had a consultation on it, but haven’t seen the results of that.

Seth Godin says that permission-based communications are ‘anticipated, personal and relevant’. Does this extend to web display advertising, which is of course are no longer advertising, but direct marketing by virtue of the cookie technology we can deploy.
Are we moving into an era where I anticipate that all ‘adverts’ I see online are anticipated, personal and relevant’ and should I be given choices as suggested in Principle 5?
