I’d lean much more heavily on your more qualitative research methods, looking at trends, actual search suggestions, etc. Social platforms are obviously also increasingly used for search and increasingly taken into account by search algorithms as they attempt to ‘listen’ to people and ‘think’ like people more. Just my 2p.

Thanks for the comment. I don’t use Google data as gospel accurate exact figures (they are after all general estimates) but they are highly useful as trend data, same with Google Analytics. By regularly using the keyword tool in conjunction with Google Insights you can monitor which keywords are trending at what points of the year and which ones are picking up pace vs. those that are losing ground. It’s not a perfect science but the point with keyword analysis is to unearth popular keyword searches that you can target based on relevance to your brand and website.

I don’t consider it invalid – I’ve found lots of excellent keywords using this data, validated by running searches on Google, Bing etc to see what competition is around. I’ve optimised pages and driven traffic as a result of this type of analysis. That’s not to say my approach is utopian SEO, there is much more to SEO than the basics of keyword planning, just that it does work (provided you measure it of course).

Of course there are other tools out there but most people I know are more familiar with the Google set.

thanks
james

Thanks Emma, I saw these at the time – great tests, but think G has updated the tool since then. IMO it’s still worthwhile using for gap analysis since relative importance of keyphrases to target is indicative – but thanks for flagging up.

(Quote from latter reference: “…I’ve finally proved that is of no use to anyone whatsoever in the UK – because it’s showing data for UK-based searches using google.com, and includes no data for google.co.uk…”)

And, this guy ran a series of tests especially for use in the UK: http://www.malcolmcoles.co.uk/blog/google-adwords-keywords-tool-uk/

Those I think are the 2 articles that summed it up best, hope that helps

Thanks for detailed “treat with caution” comment Helen. You mean regional, e.g. within parts of the UK due to IP lookup inaccuracies? Overall UK figures are valid?
