We are one of those the businesses that you are referring to. The added disadvantage is that we are a small company, burdened with all the usual new company cash-flow issues, and like a deer in the headlights when confronted with the vast array of solutions to engaging Social Media and Digital Marketing. While not expecting an answer to the bigger issue, I would appreciate your opinion with regard to the relationship between Social Media ‘Follower’ stats and Website Traffic. The pure Google Analytic numbers tell me there is no direct correlation between New Social Media activity and New Visitor Website visits. From my rather naive logic, I can only draw the conclusion that there is no direct benefit from increased Social Media ‘followers’. Example, we just experienced a 33% increase in Instagram followers in a couple of days (we have an individual who manages our Social Media sites, and I’m not sure why the jump occurred, and that’s not the point of my question) However, there was absolutely no increase in the New Visitor traffic to the website. So my question is, if there is no direct effect of a significant increase in New Visitor website traffic, is there any indirect benefit to be realised over time? Or, and this is my biggest fear, does Social Media actually exists in an isolated world of its own where people engage in the posts they read/see based on the merits of the post with little or no interest in the company that actually made the post, or the products that company represents? While I can enjoy the warm and fuzzy feeling of seeing huge leap in our Social Media followers, I have a hard time rationalising the associated costs when I cannot identify a correlation to New Visitor hits on the site, and I’m not looking for a correlation to Sales, that’s up to us once the visitor hits the site. I am just trying to understand if New Social Media Followers should correlate to New Website Hits? You are right in that the issue of Social Media and Digital Marketing is very much a moving target, and any insight you might have would be much appreciated.
