You are absolutely right. I think the mistake most businesses make online is forgetting it is personal, one-to-one relationships that create the foundations of a great business. Its strange really as online is absolutely perfect for facilitating such relationships.

The content / campaign / big idea that cascades into content such as press releases is indeed what makes or breaks it. It is also the most exciting part, once the big idea thinking is done it is usually about following a well defined task list!

With regards to services I would recommend, it would be PRNewwire, PRWeb & Sourcewire. If something is good enough it is more likely to be picked up by the BIG news sites through these networks than any other.

Other services that target specific niches or if you are purely concerned about inbound links for example (Rightly or wrongly) are still worth investigating.

Do you have any recent ideas or client work you could share with us Sarah, either on here or on email it would be great to hear from you. (chris.soames@smartinsights.com)

Thanks
Chris

By the way, which newswire services do you find the best? I still find a personal approach works best – even for digital!

Thanks for your comments and really good points. I think as you say all content based marketing needs structure and should be tied together using campaigns for example. By putting the effort into the planning early on it will become obvious how different forms of content can come off the back of the campaign, PR obviously just one of many types.

Do you manage or have been involved with many content focussed campaigns?

Chris

PR and press releases are the perfect foundation on which to create and amplify a durable online content marketing strategy. Whilst not quite in line with the article, repackaging and refocusing releases as blog posts, white papers, PDFs and slide decks creates additional variants which can again be used as part of a credible search and social media optimisation plan.
