It’s just not as new as it might look. I have been working on interesting instagram campaigns with brands as Mini, O2, Bupa, Samsung, Red Bull or Jaguar since early 2012.
One thing PR agencies tend to oversee (or don’t want to explain to their clients maybe) is that that the number of followers doesn’t truly reflects the real engagement with posted pics (as Mercedes campaign demonstrates in their purely virtual number of “impressions” mentioned above). Dynamics of Intsgram audience are a bit more complex and as some “big names” growth has been driven by “artificial” factors (e.g. being advertised on Suggested Users page, or through synergy from other social networks) the rate of “dead” users might be much higher than for organicaly growing photographers. The number of likes and comments on pictures is then a way more meaningful measure of engagement.
